Apple’s “e” iPhones are the most affordable way to get a current-generation iPhone. The iPhone 16e arrived in early 2025, and Apple replaced it with the iPhone 17e on 2 March 2026. From the outside they look almost the same, so is the newer model worth paying for, or is the 16e the better deal now?

Short answer: if you are buying new at full price, get the iPhone 17e, because it costs the same £599 but starts with double the storage. If you already own a 16e, there is no strong reason to upgrade. And if you can find a 16e at a clearly lower price, it is still a great phone.

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 17e: key differences

Feature iPhone 16e iPhone 17e
Chip A18 A19
Starting storage 128GB 256GB
UK launch price £599 (128GB) £599 (256GB)
Screen 6.1-inch OLED, 60Hz 6.1-inch OLED, 60Hz

Rear camera 48MP single 48MP single, improved processing
Modem Apple C1 Apple C1X
Wireless charging 7.5W Qi, no MagSafe MagSafe up to 15W
Apple Intelligence Yes Yes

Price and storage: the biggest real difference

Both phones launched at £599 in the UK, but the iPhone 17e gives you 256GB for that price, while the 16e started at 128GB. For anyone who shoots lots of photos and videos, or keeps music and films offline, that extra space is worth a lot. It also means you are less likely to need iCloud storage upgrades later.

Performance

The A19 chip in the 17e is faster than the A18 in the 16e, but in daily use both feel very quick. Apps, games, video editing and Apple Intelligence features run smoothly on either. The newer chip mainly matters for long-term value, because it should stay comfortable for a little longer as iOS gets heavier.

Design and display

The two phones look and feel almost identical: a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a notch, a single rear camera, the Action button and USB-C. The 17e uses Ceramic Shield 2 glass, which Apple says is tougher against scratches.

Both screens run at 60Hz. If you are used to smooth 120Hz Android phones or a Pro iPhone, scrolling will feel less fluid. Neither model has the Dynamic Island.

Camera

Both have a single 48MP rear camera that can crop in for a sharp 2x shot. There is no ultrawide lens on either phone. Photos are excellent in good light, with natural skin tones and very reliable video. The 17e benefits from newer image processing, so low-light shots and portraits are a little better, but the difference is small.

Charging: MagSafe finally arrives

This is the upgrade 16e owners asked for. The iPhone 16e supports basic 7.5W Qi wireless charging but no MagSafe, so magnetic chargers, wallets and car mounts do not snap on properly. The iPhone 17e adds MagSafe with charging up to 15W. If you use MagSafe accessories, this alone could decide it.

Battery life and connectivity

The iPhone 16e already had excellent battery life for its size, partly thanks to Apple’s efficient C1 modem. The 17e uses the newer C1X modem and should last at least as long. Both easily get through a full day for most people.

Software and updates

Both run iOS 26 and both support Apple Intelligence. Apple usually supports iPhones for many years, so either phone should get updates well into the 2030s, with the 17e likely supported for one extra year.

Should you upgrade from iPhone 16e to 17e?

Probably not. The 16e is still fast, supported for years and has the same screen and camera layout. Upgrade only if you are running out of storage or really want MagSafe.

Which should you buy new in 2026?

Choose the iPhone 17e if you:

  • Are buying new and want the best value from Apple’s line-up
  • Want 256GB of storage without paying extra
  • Use or plan to use MagSafe chargers and accessories
  • Want the longest possible software support

Choose the iPhone 16e if you:

  • Find it discounted by £100 or more, new or refurbished
  • Do not need more than 128GB of storage
  • Do not care about MagSafe

If you want 120Hz, a second camera and the Dynamic Island, the standard iPhone 17 is the step up, but it costs around £200 more. A refurbished iPhone can also be a smart way to save money.

Our verdict

The iPhone 17e is the better buy at full price because it doubles the storage and adds MagSafe for the same £599. The iPhone 16e is still a very good phone and becomes a bargain if you find it well below the 17e’s price. For 16e owners, keep what you have.
