The Samsung Galaxy A26 and Galaxy A56 look similar on paper. Both have a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen, a 5,000mAh battery, IP67 water resistance and six years of Android upgrades. Yet the A56 launched at £499 in the UK and the A26 at £299. So is the A56 really worth the extra money, or is the A26 all you need?

Here is the quick answer: the Galaxy A26 is the smarter buy for most people who use their phone for calls, WhatsApp, browsing and social media. The Galaxy A56 is worth it if you care about camera quality, faster performance, fast charging and a premium build.

Where the two phones are the same

It is worth starting with what you get on both, because this is why the A26 is such good value. Both screens are big, sharp and smooth at 120Hz. Both phones last a full day on a charge. Both are IP67 rated, so rain and splashes are not a worry. And both get the same long update promise, so the cheaper A26 will not be left behind on software.

Useful extras like Circle to Search, Samsung Wallet and Samsung’s Knox security are also on both.

Performance: the A56 is clearly faster

The Exynos 1580 in the A56 is a noticeable step up from the Exynos 1380 in the A26. Apps open faster, the camera responds quicker and games run more smoothly. On the A26, everyday tasks are fine, but you will see the odd pause when switching between heavy apps or using the camera quickly.

If you plan to keep your phone for four or five years, the extra speed of the A56 helps it stay comfortable for longer as apps get heavier.

Cameras: the biggest real-world difference

Both main cameras are 50MP with optical image stabilisation, and in good daylight the A26 takes perfectly nice photos. The gap shows indoors, at night and with moving subjects. The A56 captures more detail, cleaner low-light shots and better video. Its ultrawide is also sharper (12MP against 8MP).

The A56 also gets more of Samsung’s Galaxy AI photo editing tools, such as Best Face and more advanced object removal. If you take lots of photos of kids, pets or nights out, the A56 is the better camera phone.

Build and design

The A56 has an aluminium frame and glass back, and it feels close to a flagship in the hand. The A26 has a plastic frame with a glass back. It still looks modern, but it does not feel as solid. If you always use a case, this matters less.

Charging and storage

The A56 charges at up to 45W, while the A26 manages 25W. In practice the A56 gets from empty to full noticeably faster, which is handy if you often forget to charge overnight. Neither phone includes a charger in the box.

One point in favour of the A26: it has a microSD card slot, so you can add cheap storage for photos and videos. The A56 does not, so choose the storage you need when you buy it.

What about the Galaxy A27 and A57?

Samsung has launched the Galaxy A57 and Galaxy A27 in 2026. The A57 is a modest upgrade and costs more at launch than the A56 did. That is good news if you are shopping on value, because the A26 and A56 are now regularly discounted. A discounted A56 can be better value than a full-price A57, and a discounted A26 remains one of the safest budget choices in the UK.

Price in 2026

In 2026 the Galaxy A26 has been available SIM-free from around £230 at UK retailers, and sometimes less during sales. The A56 now sells well below its £499 launch price too. The gap between them is smaller than it used to be, which makes the A56 more tempting than it was at launch. Always compare a few retailers, and remember that buying SIM-free with a SIM-only plan is often cheaper overall than a contract.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Galaxy A26 if you:

  • Mainly use your phone for calls, messages, browsing and social media
  • Want the lowest price with long software support
  • Like the option of adding a microSD card
  • Are buying for a parent, teenager or as a second phone

Buy the Galaxy A56 if you:

  • Take lots of photos and videos, especially indoors or at night
  • Want smoother performance that lasts for years
  • Want faster charging
  • Prefer a premium metal build

Our verdict

The Galaxy A26 gives you most of the A56 experience for a lot less money, and for many people that is the right call. But the A56 is the better phone in every area that you notice day to day: speed, camera and charging. If the price gap at your retailer is under about £100, the A56 is worth the extra. If the gap is bigger, the A26 is hard to beat.
